&*Wang Ch'ung, a native of Soochow, was influenced in calligraphy by the styles of Chu Yun-ming and Ts'ai Yu while basing his style on those of Wang Hsi-chih and Yu Shih-nan. Although he passed away at the age of 39, he was almost as famous as the renowned Wen Cheng-ming (1470-1559). Small cursive script best reflects the creative character and aesthetic consciousness of Wang Ch'ung. His calligraphic style may appear bland at first, but close observation reveals considerable variety to the forms of the characters and the brush strokes. This handscroll has a spacious composition and the characters appear elegantly refined, revealing the straightforward spirit of the artist's character and calligraphic style. &* Wang Chong (style name Lüren, later Lüji; sobriquet Yayi shanren) was a native of Changzhou (modern Suzhou). His calligraphy style began with that of Wang Xizhi and Yu Shinan, but Zhu Yunming and Cai Yu had even greater influences on him. Although Wang died young at the Chinese age of 40, he was already quite renowned in calligraphy, which is why he was ranked with Zhu Yunming and Wen Zhengming as one of the Three Masters of Wu. The arrangement of the cursive script here is spacious with Wang’s skill manifested in its simplicity, imparting vigor to a style that has a natural and innocent manner. Though appearing bland at first glance, the characters and strokes are quite varied, creating a quality that is elegantly extraordinary and naturally unrestrained.&*1.
